15 January 2016 – This month is a bit of a milestone for me.  It will mark my 15th year in the discovery/e-discovery/litigation support industry. For the last 10 years I have been living in Europe, leveraging my 25+ years of experience in intellectual property law and digital media in the U.S. and Europe to advise clients on matters involving digital media and intellectual property rights, managing EU transfer pricing investigations and state aid investigations, and managing responses to DG COMP investigations involving intellectual property and competition policy.

In 2001, the very first person I met in the discovery/litigation support ecosystem industry was Nigel Murray.  We met at LegalTech in New York, my first attendance at the event.  We hit it off.  He became the first vendor subscriber to my new “discovery listserv” which I was developing to distribute news, job opportunities, etc. to the discovery ecosystem.  At that LegalTech he cajoled about 70 of his contacts to subscribe.  From a base of 110 subscribers that year, it has grown to 95,000+ world-wide: lawyers, paralegals, litigation support personnel, forensic analysts, accountants, staffing agencies, legal vendors, law firm HR departments, in-house law departments, law school recruitment offices, international organizations, media companies, etc. And that now includes the technology, media and telecommunications  community, and the artificial intelligence community.

Thanks, Nigel.

Nigel has been at the forefront of the litigation support and eDisclosure industry in the UK since 1991. He managed the first eDisclosure project to go before a UK court in the early 2000’s and has helped facilitate the development of the industry within the major law firms in the UK, mainland Europe and the Middle East. Nigel was founder and Managing Director of TRILANTIC, the first UK-based eDisclosure company. Some of his prominent work in Europe included advising a German bank on its strategy for the collection and processing of all documentation required for current and potential litigation. He also managed the collection and processing of several million paper documents for legal review for a Norwegian pharmaceutical company facing intellectual property litigation in the United States. Nigel is a frequent speaker at both public events around the world and training sessions within law firms and corporations.

And LegalTech attendees know that Nigel has been organizing a Commonwealth Brunch at LegalTech for 10 years now. This year’s takes place on Sunday 31 January. For some background, read Chris Dale’s piece here.

Nigel’s focus these days is information governance (IG).  We had a chance to chat about his thoughts on IG at the LawTech Europe Congress in Brussels … an event that is fast becoming a “must attend” event for the e-discovery community in Europe:

LawTech Congress 2016

As I have noted, the LawTech Europe Congress has become a “must attend” event for the e-discovery community in Europe. I might be a little biased because I am on the advisory board of the Congress and I lead several panels. But of all the e-discovery events to which I have been invited to participate as a board member over the years, this was the one I chose.

Fred Gyebi-Ababio, the founder and director of this most ambitious project, has achieved exactly what he intended: an event where attendees are engaged throughout with advanced topic presentations, panel discussions, and an array of the latest solutions from “A List” exhibitors and presenters. Fred’s decision to move it to Brussels was a great move because it opened the event to more participants.

NOTE: we are back in Brussels this year on Monday 7 November and Tuesday 8 November, so mark your calendars. And this year we are beefing up our Cyber Security track and Digital Forensics track and Artificial Intelligence track. If you wish to participate as a speaker email us at eventplanner@e-discovery-europe.com.
